Lightpanda Browser: Zig Headless Browser Built for AI & Automation
A post-Chromium headless browser rewritten in Zig for AI/automation density—CDP-compatible, MCP-native, not a Blink/WebKit patch.

What it does
Lightpanda is a headless browser designed for AI and automation, written in Zig with V8 for JavaScript, libcurl for loading, and html5ever for HTML parsing. The README’s core claim: not a Chromium fork, not a WebKit patch—a new browser without a graphical rendering engine, aimed at workloads where hundreds of Chromium instances become expensive.
Operator surface from the public README:
- Fetch/dump: HTML, Markdown, PNG, PDF, structured data (JSON-LD / OpenGraph / meta), with wait flags (
--wait-until,--wait-ms,--wait-selector,--wait-script). - CDP server for Puppeteer/Playwright-style clients (
lightpanda serveon127.0.0.1:9222); optional Unix socket; WebDriver BiDi via--protocol webdriver. - Agent mode in-process (
lightpanda agent) that drives the browser from natural language or slash commands and can export PandaScript for deterministic, token-free replay (lightpanda run). - Native MCP (
lightpanda mcp) over stdio or HTTP withMcp-Session-Idisolation/sharing and aruntool for PandaScript. - Install via Homebrew, AUR, nightly binaries (Linux/macOS x86_64 & aarch64), Docker (
lightpanda/browser), or Nix; Windows via WSL2. Linux release binaries need recent glibc (musl/Alpine and Android/Termux are called out as non-starters for the stock binaries).
The project publishes its own crawler benchmark table (933 pages on AWS EC2 m5.large) claiming ~16× less peak memory and ~9× faster execution vs headless Chrome for a 100-page slice—cite as project-published numbers, not third-party verification. Feature checklist covers CORS, DOM APIs, XHR/Fetch, cookies, custom headers, proxy, network interception, robots.txt, CDP/BiDi, adblocker, and more; WPT results are linked. Telemetry is on by default (LIGHTPANDA_DISABLE_TELEMETRY=true to opt out).
Who it’s for
- Teams running many concurrent agent browsers where Chromium RAM/CPU cost dominates.
- Automation authors who already speak CDP / Puppeteer / Playwright and want a lighter endpoint.
- Agent builders who want MCP + in-process agent without bolting a full desktop Chrome into every worker.

How it differs from similar projects
Versus Chromium headless / Playwright browsers, Lightpanda’s bet is a from-scratch Zig runtime optimized for headless AI workloads rather than shipping a full desktop browser stack. Versus scraping-only HTTP clients, it keeps real JS execution (mandatory for modern SPAs) while still targeting memory/latency. Versus other “agent browsers,” native MCP + agent mode + PandaScript replay is part of the public product story—prototype with an LLM, ship scripts without a model at runtime.
Treat “16x lighter / 9x faster” as README/demo benchmarks with linked methodology—not independent TidyHow measurements. Contributors must sign a CLA. Build-from-source needs Zig 0.17.0 plus V8/libcurl/html5ever prerequisites.
